Northern Highway 11 and 17 Safety Act, 2025

Introduces new safety standards and enforcement provisions for commercial vehicles operating on Northern Ontario's Highways 11 and 17, corridors with historically high rates of serious and fatal collisions involving trucks. Amends both the Highway Traffic Act and the Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act.

The bill responds to long-standing safety concerns raised by northern communities and trucking industry representatives. Some critics argue that additional physical infrastructure investment — such as passing lanes and rest stops — is equally important and not addressed by the legislation.
